Messinia, at the south western end of the Peloponese is one the loveliest corners of Greece and one of the least discovered by travellers. Messinia can be divided in 4 territories:
1. Kalamata - Mani - Taygetus - The area that includes Kalamata, the capital of Messinia, and all the area east of Kalamata, which belongs to the wider area of Mani
2. Central Messinia - The area of Northwest Messinia, which is consisted from villages only
3. North-West Messinia - The area that includes the small cities of Kiparisia, Filiatra and Gargaliani
4. South-West Messinia - The south area of Messinia, which includes cities of Pilos, Chrani, Methoni and Koroni
The eastern shore of the Messinian bay is spectacular, with the western slopes of the Taygetos Mountain plunging into the crystal clear waters of the bay, and the medieval towns of Mani dotting its southern end. The western shore of the bay and the Ionian shore of Messinia are mostly lowlands with magnificent sandy beaches, wonderful little fishing villages and some of the best-preserved medieval castles and fortresses in the Mediterranean.
Walking around Messinia is like travelling back at the most important phases of Greek history: cities dating back to Homer's days, Mycenaean tombs and palaces, classical temples, ancient theatres, Byzantine churches, Medieval castles, are only few of the landmarks in this magical trip.
